House of Hackney launches on 1stDibs with exclusive regenerated vintage and antique collection

This June, luxury British interiors brand, House of Hackney, announces its launch on 1stDibs, the leading online marketplace for extraordinary design, simultaneously unveiling a regenerated vintage and antique collection exclusive to the platform.

Recognised for its fearless and innovative use of colour and print, House of Hackney has been ripping up the interiors rule book since 2011. Now, the brand reworking tradition for a new generation turns its attention to vintage and antique items for its 1stDibs storefront launch.

Launching alongside select pieces from House of Hackney’s mainline collections of wallpaper, fabric, and home accessories, the one-off vintage and antique collection will arrive in two drops; the first will launch online 07 June, with the second due to launch in Spring 2024.

As the foremost destination for vintage and antique pieces from around the globe, 1stDibs presented the ideal platform for House of Hackney's entrance into this world. Since 2000, 1stDibs has captured the magic of the Paris flea market, connecting those seeking the most beautiful things on earth with highly coveted sellers and makers in vintage, antique, and contemporary furniture, home décor, art, fine jewellery, watches and fashion. The platform hosts an expansive collection of antique and vintage furniture, collectible design and contemporary pieces from the 21st century’s most innovative artisans, studios and world-renowned brands, ranging from Charles & Ray Eames and George Nakashima to Faye Toogood and Fornasetti.

“1stDibs has long maintained an unparalleled offering of vintage and antique treasures, even as our supply of newly minted furniture and objects has grown to meet our consumers' increasing appetite for the latest creations. The House of Hackney collection bridges the best of both those worlds, swathing  beautifully made, classic pieces (still worthy of our love and admiration) in eye-catching prints that are very much of this time.” - 1stDibs Editorial Director, Anthony Barzilay Freund

To the House of Hackney Founders Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle, it was important that each piece of the new collection not only honoured its original life and design, but spoke to the House of Hackney ethos of championing traditional British craftsmanship with prints and colours that play ode to their greatest muse, Mother Nature. The first drop, aptly named ‘Super Bloom’, aims to create the sense of a true ‘living room’ bringing the garden inside in a fantastical way.

The husband and wife team spent six months travelling across the United Kingdom to find the very best craftspeople and factories to help bring the new collection to life, with a dream to create ‘future heirlooms’ and make homes sing with nature-inspired prints and colour palettes. The pair sourced every item themselves, delivering each piece to their home in Cornwall where they would then work with local makers to carefully and respectfully repair and reupholster, work with or replace fabrications and assess frames and make them whole again. In an effort  to reduce landfill at all costs, they fixed spring cassettes and, in some cases, replaced fills with wool stuffing or pads to give bounce and softness.

“As a brand and as founders, we’re on a journey from being a B Corp sustainable business to becoming a regenerative one, where we hope to leave the world a better place than we found it. We're really passionate about making new of old and revising beautiful pieces of heirloom furniture so future generations can enjoy them, cherish them and, hopefully, continue to pass them on, and we’re incredibly excited to put these pieces out into the world with 1stDibs.” - House of Hackney Co-Founder, Javvy M Royle

Made up of eight unique furniture pieces with prices starting at £1,686, the first drop in June includes two 1970s armchairs, reupholstered in the vibrant Compton Jacquard Onyx jacquard print; a 1960s three-seater sofa by Coronado Scarpa for C&B Italy, dressed in rich Amatoria Black Velvet; a show-stopping Grandangolo Sofa by Titiana Ammannati & Gianpiero Vitelli, also from the 1960s, reimagined in Hollyhocks Spring; Amanta Lounge Chairs by B&B Italia, reworked in Persephone woven jacquard; and a Peter Bliss 1980s daffodil lamp, a rare piece reminiscent of a giant lego daffodil.

“It's so important that we look at a circular model and reimagine old furniture to give it a new lease of life. The House of Hackney vintage and antique range for 1stDibs is largely made up of 1970’s modernist Italian pieces, so they are extremely well made - it was a time of such interesting furniture engineering. Timeless and iconic, there is a mix of hero and simple modular pieces which can be stacked side by side or presented as singular chairs. Having reimagined them in some of our favourite British jacquards and velvets, they will last another 30 years or longer.” - House of Hackney Co-Founder, Frieda Gormley

The first drop will be available to view in a limited-time pop-up hosted by House of Hackney in their East London showroom, running from 07 June - Saturday 17 June 2023. Set within a previously unseen area of the St Michael's flagship store, the School House, the collection will be presented as an exhibition, with consultants on hand to explain the story of each piece.

The House of Hackney storefront and vintage and antique collection launches on 1stDibs on Wednesday 07 June 2023 at www.1stdibs.com/dealers/house-of-hackney-us-inc.

The House of Hackney x 1stDibs vintage and antique pop-up exhibition runs Wednesday 07 June - Saturday 17 June 2023.
